Toddler Drowning A Reminder that Ensuring Pool Safety Important

A small child drowned a few days ago in a “sand pool” at the Fort Eustis Army post in Newport News, Virginia.

This “pool” routinely is frequented by families during the summer months, but it is unclear what type of measures the Army took to ensure safety. A sandpit is turned into a makeshift pool so children can enjoy the water slides and mushroom clouds. On Thursday, July 12, the small girl was taken out of the pool unconscious. On the scene efforts could not save her.

Accidental drowning is the leading cause of death for children under age 5 and the second-leading cause of death of children 14 and under. More on pool and child safety in future blogs.
