Are There Complications from Botulism?

In rare cases, botulism can result in death due to respiratory failure. A patient with severe botulism may require a breathing machine as well as intensive medical and nursing care for several months. Fatigue and shortness of breath for years and long-term therapy may be needed to aid recovery from a severe case of botulism.

It also can lead to muscle paralysis. The paralysis can be progressive, often moving from the shoulders and upper arms down through the body.  The 52-year old man from New Mexico's Sandoval County, mentioned in one of our previous posts, contracted botulism poisoning and nearly is completely paralyzed, only able to wiggle his toes.  His doctors only are able to communicate with him by interpreting his toe wiggles in response to their questions.

How do you report a complaint of botulism? Call the FDA.

What can I do to prevent botulism? More in a later blog.
