DOJ Report: High Rate of Sexual Abuse and Rape of Jailed Juveniles

Is the Obama administration moving too slowly on reforms that would reduce sexual abuse and rape in U.S. prisons? A recent study from its own Department of Justice reports a "very high rate of staff sexual misconduct" against juvenile inmates. It cites two facilities in Virginia and one in Maryland, among others.

Child Loses Finger in Stroller - Injury Forces Recall

British stroller maker Maclaren failed to inform government regulators for 5 years about the danger of its strollers. The company has known for some time that the stroller hinges could cause serious injuries to the fingers of children.

Infants Injured by Maclaren Strollers - Fingers Amputated

According to recent press reports, the British stroller maker Maclaren knew for at least 5 years that its strollers could cut the tips off --- or completely amputate ---  a child's fingers, but did nothing to alert the federal watchdog Consumer Products Safety Commission until very recently.

$1.3 Million Settlement for 16 Men Abused by Priests

As reported by the Washington Post, the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington has reached a $1.3 million settlement with 16 men who were sexually abused by priests between 1962 and 1982.

Both the total dollar figure and the amount per victim -- an average of about $81,000 before legal fees -- are small compared with the sums negotiated by some other Catholic dioceses, particularly in California, where two recent settlements totaled $160 million and topped $1 million per victim.

Hasbro Recall Toy After 2 Infant Deaths

Playskool, a unit of toy maker Hasbro, is recalling 255,000 Team Talkin' Tool Bench toys after the deaths of two small children who suffocated when the head of an oversized plastic toy nail became lodged in their throats.

One of the infants was nineteen months. The other was two years old. The toy in question is labeled for children three years and older.

Each year, thousands of children are injured by defective toys. Choking on small toys, strangulation from cords, eye injuries from darts and other projectiles are just a few of the hazards faced by kids from bad toys.
